Marseille and its must-sees
It's impossible to discover Marseille without starting with the Old Port. The Old Port is the true heart of the city. Stroll along the quays, admire the boats, enjoy a terrace, or continue your walk towards the Panier district. The Old Port is also the departure point for numerous boat trips to the Frioul Islands and the Calanques.
From the city center, then head up to discover Our Lady of the Guard affectionately nicknamed "the Good Mother". Located at the top of the hill of La Garde, the basilica offers one of the most beautiful panoramas of Marseille, the Mediterranean and the Frioul islands.
For culture and architecture enthusiasts, head to the Mucem, the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations. Located at the entrance to the Old Port, facing the sea, it has become one of Marseille's iconic buildings since its opening in 2013. Take the opportunity to cross the footbridge and discover the gardens of Fort Saint-Jean.
Another must-see place: the Old Charity, in the heart of the Panier district. This 17th-century architectural ensemble, designed by the architect Pierre Puget, now houses cultural spaces, exhibitions and museums.
A getaway between sea and heritage
Fancy setting sail? Embark from the Old Port to reach the Château d'If, the famous fortress built in the 16th century on an island off the coast of Marseille. Between history, legends and an exceptional panorama of the city and the Mediterranean, the visit offers another way to discover Marseille.
And to fully enjoy the Mediterranean setting, why not plan a trip to the Calanques of Marseille?
Limestone cliffs, small coves and turquoise waters make up an iconic landscape of the region. From the Old Port, several excursions allow you to discover the Calanques and the islands of the Frioul archipel.
Marseille, a city to discover also on foot
If your schedule doesn't allow you to dedicate a whole day to sightseeing, there's no need to do everything! A walk in the city centre already allows you to discover part of Marseille's heritage.
From the Old Port, head to the Panier district, one of Marseille's oldest neighborhoods, then continue to the Mucem and the Major Cathedral. This walk allows you to combine heritage, architecture, culture, and views of the Mediterranean in just a few hours. The Tourist Office also offers several itineraries for discovering Marseille in half a day or a full day.
A match at the Vélodrome?
For sports enthusiasts, take advantage of your stay to discover the legendary Orange Velodrome, home of Olympique de Marseille. Depending on the schedule, you may be able to attend a match and discover the unique atmosphere that reigns in the stadium.
And what about the food?
It is impossible to talk about Marseille without mentioning its gastronomy. Bouillabaisse, Mediterranean fish, panisses, Marseilles navettes or Provençal cuisine: the city offers many opportunities to discover local specialties.
